FATE Team Sikkim Visit


FATE Nepal Research Team members Dr Bishnu Raj Upreti and PhD student Ms Sony KC (KU/NCCR) visited Sikkim, India from 16-21 December 2016 to study the Cardamom value chin. During their visit, on 17 December they have met Principal Director cum Secretary of Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department of Government of Sikkim Mr. Khorlo Bhutia and Head of Department, Food Security and Agriculture of Government of Sikkim Mr. Puneet Kansal and discussed different issues related to cash crops and their impacts to women and food security.  


The team visited Hee Gaon West Sikkim and interacted with the farmers, farmers groups and leaders of the area. On the way research team also visited other cardamom growing areas of Pelling, Geyzing and Jorethang.  During the visit, meeting with Mr Rajen Thapa, Joint Director of Horticulture Department of West Sikkim (Rabdentse, Geyzing) was very helpful to understand the dynamics of cash corps and "Organic state Sikkim'.
